The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a Georgia State Patrol trooper was shot near a proposed site for Atlanta’s new public safety training facility, which opponents have dubbed “Cop City.”
Authorities say 26-year-old Manuel Esteban Paez Teran was killed by officers during a raid at the site after failing to obey verbal commands and shooting and injuring a state trooper.
Activists dispute the police version of events and are calling for the release of body camera footage. However, GBI public affairs director Nelly Miles informed WABE Thursday evening that there is no body camera footage of the incident.
According to the GBI, seven others were arrested and charged with domestic terrorism and criminal trespass.
WABE reporters Chamian Cruz and Emily Wu Pearson join “Closer Look” to discuss the latest in the investigation and controversial history of the training facility.
