WABE reporters recap booking of former President Trump at Fulton County Jail

Even with a large crowd of reporters, Trump supporters, and protesters, an even larger nationwide and international audience was focused on the Fulton County Jail. City streets were closed, and the jail was on lockdown, waiting for the 45th President of the United States to turn himself in on charges related to interfering with the 2020 election results in Georgia.

As the sun was setting in Atlanta, Trump was escorted to the Rice Street facility by a large police motorcade.

WABE’s Rahul Bali and Sam Gringlas witnessed the historic moment unfold as Trump became the first former president to have his mugshot taken.

“We should not understate the historic nature of what we have just lived through in the last two weeks,” said Gringlas. “Some of this becomes normalized when we’re on the fourth indictment of a former president. But it is quite striking to watch this unfold. This has never happened before in American history.”

“You had state representatives, you had Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene there. So yeah, it brought out a lot of people,” said Bali about the array of people gathered at the jail, in addition to supporters waving large Trump flags and protesters dressed in inmate costumes.

Trump’s booking was unusually brief, lasting only 24 minutes between his arrival and departure from the Fulton County Jail. Upon returning to his private plane at Hartsfield-Jackson airport, Trump told the press he was innocent of the charges, and he maintained that the 2020 election was stolen.

The 18 co-defendants in the election case have all turned themselves in and had their mugshots taken. One of the defendants filed a motion for a speedy trial, and District Attorney Fani Willis is aiming to hold the trial on October 24th. The judge will determine when the trial date will be scheduled for all of the defendants.
