Wild Boars Roaming in Metro Atlanta
Some residents of metro Atlanta are being extra cautious as they head outdoors.
That’s because wild boars are once again reported roaming around DeKalb and Gwinnett counties.
“If they’re in a nice neighborhood that’s plush and has nice yards and everything….that’s where they’re going to be able to eat and thrive,” says David Neck, a wildlife control expert with the Atlanta-based Team Pest USA.
Neck says these animals are usually scared of humans and will maintain a distance unless they feel threatened. An audio version of this story.
He adds that if you come across a wild boar…..it’s best to act as calm as possible.
Dan McGowan is a senior wildlife biologist with the state’s Department of Natural Resources. He says the Yellow River area is an attractive spot for wild boars, which can weigh between 150 and 300 pounds.
“We’ve had reports on the DeKalb County/Gwinnett County line between Lithonia and Centerville for quite a number of years. Now, they’re maybe branching out to the adjacent subdivisions.”
The DNR is not getting involved in this matter.
McGowan says that’s because the organization rarely traps on private lands.
