Zac Brown Band’s Coy Bowles Releases Third Children’s Book
Multi-instrumentalist and multi-Grammy winner Coy Bowles has played countless sold-out venues with the Zac Brown Band. He’s also released his own album with his band Coy Bowles and the Fellowship.
But his most recent venture starts with these words:
Life has its ups
And life has its downs
You have days when you smile
You have days when you frown
This is from his upcoming children’s book “When You’re Feeling Sick,” which will be released on Jan. 10.
“When You’re Feeling Sick” is actually his third children’s book after “Amy Giggles” and “Will Powers: Where There’s a Will There’s a Way.” Bowles wants to write books about issues that are relevant to kids today.
“’Amy Giggles’ happened to have a bullying undertone,” said Bowles, which is a prevalent issue for kids in schools and online. For his second book, he went even further and did field research as schools.
“I sat down and talked with teachers, principals, superintendents, as many people I could get in the same room with, and asked them what was going on,” he said. “And across the board, people said self-entitlement and work ethics issue.”
Those become the themes for “Will Powers.”
“When You’re Feeling Sick” comes from Bowles’ experiences inside a hospital with his mother, who he stayed with for about eight weeks. That experience heightened his great respect for doctors and also exposed him to the hardships of kids in hospitals with chronic illnesses.
“I wrote this book in my head because the power of doctors, and I think if I could do anything, it would be to make the quality of someone’s life better,” said Bowles.
While at the hospital, he also met a little girl in the hospital who was a fan of his first book. Bowles ended up reading to her, which actually made him a little nervous.
“I had never read a book to a kid before … I was so self-conscious about it, and I went in, and it was awesome,” he said.
“Kids get real freaked out when they get sick for the first time,” continued Bowles. He hopes to get this book in the hands of kids to help them through their fears, and he also hopes this book helps children who have chronic illnesses and spend a lot of time in hospitals.
