Charles Edwards is the Assistant News Director for 90.1 FM WABE. As a reporter, he covers a variety of topics and issues. However, he specializes in politics and closely covers Atlanta City Hall and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. Charles received a B.A. is Mass Media Arts from Clark Atlanta University in 2002. However, his reporting experience dates back to 2000. His resume includes covering the state legislature, live election night coverage, and award winning health care reporting. In 2005, Charles was the recipient of a 2005 National Public Radio reporting fellowship. As a reporter on NPR’s National Desk, Charles covered the White House, the U.S. Congress, Arlington National Cemetery and the Washington Nationals among other stories.

Lawsuit Filed For DeKalb School Board Members

Governor Nathan Deal Monday is scheduled to talk about the recommendation to suspend six DeKalb County school board members.

In an advisory Friday, Deal did not say whether he’ll act on the state education board’s recommendation. However, some DeKalb school board members aren’t taking chances.

Two Courts Issue Stays Of Execution For Hill

Within a half hour of the scheduled 7pm execution of Georgia death row inmate Warren Lee Hill, Jr., two courts issued stays of execution.

In an email to WABE, Brian Kammer, one of Hill’s attorneys, says one stay came from the Georgia Court of Appeals. Kammer says the other came from the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit.

New Virus Strain Found In Twenty Fulton Residents

A new strain of norovirus has been moving through the country for the past nine months. It’s a gastrointestinal illness.

Since the second week of January, 20 Fulton County residents have contracted the strain. Today, county health officials took steps aimed at preventing further spread.

  Compared to the almost 950,000 people who live in Fulton County, twenty is not a big number.

Chambliss Talks Retirement From U.S. Senate

U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss (R - Georgia) talks to reporters about no longer running for re-election.

Georgia’s Saxby Chambliss released a statement announcing he won’t seek re-election to the U.S. Senate next year. Today was the first time Chambliss spoke publicly and went into detail about his decision. Chambliss talked to reporters after he and Democratic U.S. Senator Mark Warner of Virginia lectured University of Georgia students and faculty.

The Republican brushed off talk that his willingness to work with Democrats would lead to him losing a primary.

“No, the one thing that I was totally confident is on my re-election,” Chambliss said.

Chambliss Confirms Plans to Retire from Senate in 2014

  In a statement today, U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss confirmed he will not run for re-election in 2014.

Prior to Chambliss’ statement, a congressional aide told the Associated Press Chambliss would not seek a third term in the U.S. Senate.

Wells Fargo to Hire 200 in Georgia

A national bank with significant Georgia presence will hire 200 people in the state.

Wells Fargo area president Jim Lawrence says the company will hire bankers, loan originators and loan officers.

“Given basically the situation in the economy, by having more bankers, we have more people and more time to spend with our clients to really assess their overall financial picture,” Lawrence said.

With a still tight economy, Lawrence says more people are going to banks to find out how to improve their finances.

Atlanta Gets "F" For Spending Transparency

How transparent is Atlanta’s city government when it comes to spending? Not very, according to a report released by a consumer advocacy group today.

The Georgia Public Interest Research Group gave Atlanta a failing grade for not making detailed information easily accessible about how the city spends tax dollars.
